If you notice fine webbing on your plant's leaves, tiny yellow or brown spots on the leaf surface, or leaves drying out for no apparent reason — you're most likely dealing with spider mites (Tetranychus urticae). They're one of the most common and damaging pests for indoor plants, especially in summer and in dry indoor air.
I've dealt with this personally and know how frustrating it can be. In this article I'll tell you exactly what I used, what worked — and importantly, what you can find in Romania.
Why Spider Mites Are Difficult to Eliminate
Spider mites are not insects — they're arachnids. This means regular insecticides won't work on them. You need specific acaricides.
The second important thing: one treatment is never enough. A female can lay up to 200 eggs, and eggs are resistant to most active substances. That's why you need at least 3 treatments at 5–7 day intervals, and it's essential to alternate active ingredients to prevent resistance from developing.
What I Used — Acaricides Available in Romania
Vertab e10ml — abamectin
This is my first product of choice during an active infestation. Vertab contains abamectin, a contact and ingestion substance effective against adults and mobile larvae. I found it on eMAG and it works quickly — first results visible within 2–3 days.
How I use it:
- 1 ampoule (10 ml) per 10 litres of water
- Spray the entire plant thoroughly, including the underside of leaves — that's where they live and lay eggs
- In the evening, away from direct light
- Repeat after 7 days with a different product
Nissorun 10 WP — hexythiazox
Nissorun targets eggs, larvae, and nymphs — exactly the stages that abamectin misses. That's why I alternate them. It's approved in Romania and available on eMAG.
How I use it:
- 0.5 g per 1 litre of water (it's concentrated — small doses)
- Use as treatment 2 or 3 in the control cycle
- Results are slower — 7–10 days — but it targets the stages abamectin doesn't reach
Full Treatment Schedule
| Treatment | Product | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Vertab (abamectin) | Day 1 |
| 2 | Nissorun (hexythiazox) | Day 7 |
| 3 | Vertab or another acaricide | Day 14 |
Don't skip any treatment, even if the plant looks recovered after the first one.
Prevention — Neem Oil and Green Soap
Once you've cleared the infestation, prevention is far easier than treatment.
Preventive Neem Oil Spray
Neem oil disrupts the reproductive cycle of mites and insects. It doesn't kill instantly, but keeps populations under control when used regularly.
Recipe:
- 1 litre of warm water
- 5 ml neem oil (1 teaspoon)
- 2–3 ml liquid green soap — this acts as an emulsifier, without it the oil won't mix with water
- Mix soap with water first, then add the oil and shake well
- Spray every 2 weeks, in the evening
Find neem oil on eMAG — search for "ulei de neem pur presat la rece" (pure cold-pressed neem oil).
Green Soap — Simple Contact Treatment
- 10–15 ml green soap per 1 litre of water
- Spray both sides of the leaves
- After 30 minutes, wipe or rinse gently — left on too long it can mark or burn sensitive leaves
Other Common Pests and What I Used
Thrips and Aphids
Thrips leave silvery streaks on leaves and tiny black dots (droppings). Aphids are visible to the naked eye — small greenish, white, or black colonies on new growth.
For both I used Mospilan (acetamiprid) — a systemic insecticide, meaning it's absorbed by the plant and acts from the inside out. One treatment was enough in my case, but I recommend 2 treatments 7 days apart to be safe.
Mospilan is also available on eMAG Romania.
A Note for Those Used to Ukrainian or Moldovan Products
If you're familiar with products from Ukraine or Moldova, you may not find the same brands here. Romania has a different phytosanitary market — some products popular elsewhere are not approved or simply not imported. The good news: eMAG has a solid selection of plant care products, and Vertab, Nissorun, and Mospilan are all available with fast delivery.
Conditions That Favour Pest Outbreaks
- Dry air — spider mites thrive in low humidity. A humidifier or a bowl of water near your plants helps preventively
- Weakened plants — a plant stressed by poor light or incorrect watering is more vulnerable
- New plants without quarantine — any new plant brought home should be kept separately for 2 weeks before placing it near others
Summary
The schedule that works: Vertab + Nissorun alternating, 3 treatments, 7 days apart. Prevent with neem oil every 2 weeks. All products available on eMAG Romania.
